Suggested Basic Sewing Supplies
Starting a new sewing project is exciting, but having the right tools makes all the difference. Whether you are joining a class or crafting at home, here are the nine must-have supplies for every beginner's kit:
-
Hand & Machine Needles: Keep a variety of sizes on hand for different fabric weights.
-
Sewing Pins: Essential for holding fabric in place; choose a size and thickness appropriate for your specific fabric to avoid leaving visible holes or bending the pins.
-
Seam Ripper: Your best friend for quickly fixing mistakes.
-
Fabric Scissors & Snips: Invest in sharp shears dedicated solely to fabric.
-
Measuring Gauge: A 6-inch gauge is perfect for quick hem and seam checks.
-
Marking Tools: Use marking pencils and tracing paper for precise pattern transfers.
-
Tracing Wheel: Essential with wax paper for moving pattern details onto your fabric.
-
Soft Tape Measure: Ideal for taking body measurements and checking curves.
-
Pin Cushion or Magnetic Bowl: Keeps your pins safe and easy to grab.
-
Versatile Thread: Start with a few basic colors in a high-quality all-purpose thread.
Are you interested in quilting? We also recommend adding a cutting mat, clear ruler, and rotary cutter to your collection. We wish you great success in all your sewing endeavors!
Additional Student Requirements
-
Personal Pattern: Each student is responsible for providing their own sewing pattern for their chosen project.
-
Project Fabric: Please bring the fabric required for your specific pattern.
-
Pattern Envelope Essentials: Students must also provide any additional recommended supplies listed on the back of their pattern envelope, such as zippers, buttons, or specific interfacings, to complete their project.
